SCHEDULE
for the
NORTON AND CHISELBOROUGH
FLOWER SHOW
SATURDAY 21st AUGUST 2010
GATES OPEN AT 2.00 p.m.
MARQUEE OPEN AT 2.30 p.m.
The Recreation Ground - Norton sub Hamdon
Entry to the Fete & Show - Adults £1.00, Concessions 50p
SCARECROW COMPETITION
Competition open to all children under the age of 13 on 21st
August 2010. Your Scarecrow may be sitting or standing, but must stick in the
ground or be self-supporting, and must not exceed 1.5 metres tall. To enter
follow the same process for all other classes.
NEW COMPETITOR PRIZE
There will be a special prize for the competitor entering the Show for the
first time, who wins the most points. Please state on entry form if you have not
entered in any class for the last 5 years.
TOP TRAY AND TOP VASE CLASSES
Full rules for both these classes are available from the Show Organiser, Andy
Jacobs, Orchardlea, New Road, Norton-sub-Hamdon.
SOME NOTES ABOUT ENTERING
Quality and uniformity are more important than size. Notes on how best to
show an exhibit have been included to help you. The gardeners who win and show
frequently have their own section. Therefore Section 1 is for people who ‘grow
to eat’ rather than ‘grow to show’. Not all classes are heavily supported
– yours could be the only entry! "Any other" Vegetable is a good
opportunity to show something unusual. And always please check the dimensions of
your exhibit meet the requirements of the schedule where stated in each class
otherwise you may miss out on winning prizes.
NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN – Manfred Roper
As with each year we have made a number of changes to the Schedule to ensure
that it remains updated and fresh. As ever the subjects of the floral art and
craft classes have changed, some of the quantities in the sections have been
reduced. A number of new classes especially for children growing plants and
vegetables and the traditional miniature garden is back. We have also increased
the number of points where people must move up to Section 2, from 9 points to 12
to help the hobby gardeners avoid being moved up to the ‘grow to show’
classes.
NORTON PARISH COUNCIL FRONT GARDEN COMPETITION
Norton sub Hamdon Parish Council will award a prize for the front garden
which, in its opinion, most enhances the village regardless of size. No need to
enter, every house is considered.
The Rules!!
All classes will be open to anyone, unless the Section has (a) an age
restriction or (b) a sectional grading. (see Class List below)
The entry fee for each class is 30p. Ten or more entries for £3. For
anyone under 17 on 21st August 2009 entry in all classes is free..
All exhibits, except for Classes 111, 112, 113, 117, 127, 128, 129, 133 and
all Children’s Floral Classes, must have been grown by the exhibitor, or be
the work of the exhibitor.
Exhibitors violating Rule 3 will forfeit any prize awarded.
Exhibits must be in place by 10.45 a.m. on the day of the Show and should
not be removed prior to 5 p.m. Exhibitors are not permitted to move or
interfere with any other exhibit.
Prizes may be withheld if the judges decide exhibits are not worthy of a
prize or if there are insufficient entries.
Not more than one exhibit may be shown by any one exhibitor in any
individual class.
Any objections must be lodged with the Show Organiser in writing and be
accompanied with a deposit of £1, which will be forfeited if the objection is
not sustained.
Disputes will be referred to the Committee for final decision.
No entry may have been made for commercial or financial gain.
The closing date for entries is Wed 18th August at 8.30pm. Entry
forms may be mailed to: the Show Organiser (Andy Jacobs, Orchardlea, New Road,
Norton-sub-Hamdon), emailed to hamdon@btinternet.com or handed in at
the Reading Room on the Wednesday prior to the Show between 7 - 8.30 p.m.
A First Prize gains 3 points, Second 2, and Third 1 point.
Eligibility to enter Sections:
Each Group, i.e. Flowers & Plants, Vegetables, and Floral are considered
separately. Within each Group, Section 1 is open to anyone except those
who scored more than 12 points in either of the two previous Shows.
Section 2 is open to anyone, but is intended for those who scored more than
12 points in that Group in either of the two previous Shows. Within a Group all
entries must be in the same Section.

In the autumn of 2008 the future financing arrangements for the show were
looking difficult. Following a public meeting the support group was founded. The
average breakeven funding for a year changed in 2009 to a £5,000 profit due to
the generosity of local people, the efforts of the support group and fine
weather on the day.
With expectations raised of "a most enjoyable weekend" it was
decided at the AGM 2009 to seek to continue the efforts at a similar level, for
the Flower Show Committee to draft and propose a written constitution, and for
the committee and support group to explore options for a trust fund to
distribute any surplus funding to local causes.
At the time of printing this schedule, the constitution has been prepared at
a draft stage and will be reviewed and presented to the 2010 AGM, paving the way
for the future stability and security of the show for years to come.
